ings of Fire is an autobiography of
WDr. APJ Abdul Kalam covering his ear-
ly life and his work in India’s space research
and missile programs. It tells the story of a boy
from a humble background who went on to
become a key player in India’s space research
and missile programs, eventually becoming
the 11th President of India (2002-2007). The
book has been very popular in India and has
been translated into different languages. I
particularly enjoyed the chapter ‘Propitiation’
where Dr. Kalam explains the rockets (SLV-III)
and missiles he and his team developed during
1981-1991.
The book covers the years 1931-1991, detailing
Dr. Kalam’s upbringing in Rameswaram, a
southern religious town in Tamil Nadu, and his
contributions to the development of the SLV-3
(Satellite Launch Vehicle-3) roc ket. Wings of
Fire serves as a remarkable example of achieving
one’s goals while fulfilling a promise to one’s
country. As I read through the book, I felt
the same humility that Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam
experienced during his involvement in this
programme. My mother recommended this
book to me, and I’m glad she did.
