Enchanting Onam

The festival of Onam takes us back to an era marked by goodwill and benevolence, painting our lives with a palette of festive, floral colours. Silver Hills Public School celebrated Onam in all its gaiety on Friday, 2 September 2022 with an array of events that showcased the ethnicity of this harvest festival. Renowned short story writer Sri P K Parakkadavu inaugurated the event at 9:30 am in the school auditorium. He exhorted the school community to seize the opportunity of celebrating Onam, in an attempt to retrieve the fading glory of our heritage and culture. He also spoke on social media excesses that go a long way in demonising our inherent and unique traditional practices. The noted writer commented on the prevalence of commercialisation of art and reinforced the need to uphold festivals like Onam to defend the onslaught of detrimental alien cultures.
Fr John Mannarathara, Principal, in his Welcome Address encouraged the students to relive the best practices of yore in an attempt to recreate the magic of Onam. Felicitations were offered by Fr Augustine K Mathew, Administrator and PTA executives Mr Madhusoodanan K and Ms Anitha Sumith. Neeraj N K, upcoming singer and school alumnus was a special invitee. Mr Ganesh Bhat, President of the school PTA, presented a memento to the Chief Guest as a token of immense gratitude. Abhinav Sajith, Assistant School Leader delivered the vote of thanks.
The day was marked by the signature games of the season like tug-of-war, Chenda Melam and class-wise flower carpet competitions. Cultural events like song and dance performances by students of classes I to XII further enriched the day. The arrival of Maveli, the legendary king in all splendour captivated one and all alike. The students and teachers savoured the taste of the traditional Onasadhya served on plantain leaves, organised by the school PTA. As the curtain fell on the festivities, the school closed for Onam vacation.
