World Environment Day Celebrations at Silver Hills Public School: A Call to Action for Sustainability
Silver Hills Public School Kozhikode celebrated World Environment Day with great enthusiasm and fervor, reaffirming its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability. The inaugural ceremony, held on June 5, 2025, was attended by students, staff, and esteemed guests.
The event commenced with a poignant dance performance, choreographed by Ms. Shabna, which poetically visualized the importance of environmental conservation. Students from classes 6, 7, and 8 participated in the dance, setting the tone for the rest of the ceremony.
Ms. Biji Suresh, HoD, Science, delivered the welcome address, while Rev. Fr. Augustine K. Mathew, Manager of Silver Hills Group of Institutions, graced the occasion with his presidential address. He emphasized the significance of conservation, citing alarming statistics on plastic pollution in India. "India is among the top three countries in plastic pollution, generating 354 million tons of plastic waste annually," he said. "It's imperative that we take collective action to mitigate this crisis."
Asst. Conservator of Forest, Kerala State Forest Department, Mr. Joshil M., who is also a renowned writer and novelist, was the chief guest. He planted a sapling to mark the occasion and delivered a thought-provoking keynote address. Mr. Joshil emphasized that Environment Day celebrations should transcend ceremonial activities and translate into tangible actions. "We must adopt sustainable practices, reduce plastic waste, and promote reuse and recycling," he urged. "It's time for us to take responsibility for our actions and work towards a greener future."
To commemorate the occasion, 25 saplings were planted on the school campus by students from all classes, representing a promise of sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Rev. Fr. Mathew Kalapurayil CMI, Principal of Silver Hills Public School, reiterated the school's commitment to environmental conservation in his address. He announced the launch of the Eco Club and emphasized the need to create a green campus. "We must strive to make our campus a model for sustainability, incorporating eco-friendly practices into our daily lives," he said. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of reducing energy consumption, conserving water, and implementing waste management practices.
Mr. Sajith K.P., faculty member, Physics, delivered a speech highlighting the importance of preserving nature and reducing plastic use. He cited research findings on the detrimental effects of microplastics and encouraged students to adopt Greta Thunberg as a role model. "We must be the change we wish to see in the world," he quoted. Furthermore, he emphasized the need to reduce carbon footprint, promote sustainable transportation, and encourage eco-friendly habits.
Madhusoodhanan K., President of the PTA, delivered a felicitation speech, praising the school's initiatives in promoting environmental awareness. Devananda of 12 A proposed vote of thanks.
The formal session concluded with a symbolic procession by students, carrying messages of love and care for nature. Aradhya and Akshatha recited an environmental poem, while Malavika Santhosh, Class XII, administered the Environment Day pledge.
The formal session was followed by a Nature Quiz conducted by Ardra and Devika Menon; Dance choreographed by Ms Kavitha Satish; Song by Arya, Hana, Diya; and a short drama directed by Mr. Vijesh K.V.
The World Environment Day celebrations at Silver Hills Public School were marked by spirited participation from staff and students, and creative expressions. The event successfully aroused environmental protection feelings among all participants, inspiring us to take action towards a more sustainable future.
