Our Patron
Blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara was born on 10th February 1805 at Kainakari , Kerala. He was ordained as priest on 29th November 1829.
He was instrumental in founding two Catholic Religious congregations for the spiritual renewal and all round development of the society - CMI (Carmelite of Mary Imaculate) and Congregation of Mother of Carmel(CMC). By starting seven Asharam’s and convent in different parts of Kerala, Fr. Chavara has initiated a spiritual movement among the people of Kerala. He was the first to initiate the idea that every church should start a school attached to it. The children of the poorer section of the society were provided midday meals and clothes by him.
He founded a “Home of Charity” to take care of the destitute and the uncared. He died at the age of 65 on 3rd January 1871. In memory of this great soul who contributed his mite not only to the society but also to the world we owe our salutation. Hence 3rd January is celebrated in commemoration of our Patron Blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara as Founders Day.
